The arms are those of the former occupant of this tomb, Robert Harris. Receipts show a payment of L20.0.0 sometime prior to 1753 to gravestone carver Nathaniel Emmes, most likely for this carving of the Harris arms. In October of 1770, the Eliot family purchased the tomb for L63 old tenor from Robert Harris' daughter, Mrs. Samuel Watts. The bill of sale also shows a payment of L2.3 to "Mr. Homer for altering (the) stone" apparently carver John Homer's charge for inscribing Eliot's name and epitaph. The Harris coat of arms remained as originally carved.
